THIS IS BRAYDEN’S STORY
Brayden was just 23 years old when he tragically died from Meningococcal B in November 2022.
Brayden felt a little unwell when he came home from touch footy on Thursday 17 November 2022. He had a headache and temperature, took some Panadol and went to bed. Friday morning, Brayden got up and attended his work Christmas party at Paintball.
By 9pm Brayden was fitting in his room and called an ambulance. Within a few hours Brayden was brain dead and there was nothing they could do for him.
Brayden passed away on Saturday 19 November 2022. A few days later Brayden’s Mother was told he had Meningococcal B. There was no rash!
Meningococcal B is a life-threatening bacterial infection. Last year NSW had 32 cases of Meningococcal B, so far this year there has been 25 cases.
A vaccine for Meningococcal ACWY strains is currently given to babies at 12 months and teenagers in Year 10, so parents believe their child is fully immunised.
However, the vaccination program fails to immunise against the Meningococcal B strain – a severe oversight leaving babies and adolescents vulnerable to the disease.
South Australia and Queensland Governments have proactively moved to protect their people by funding the vaccine for this deadly strain.
Brayden’s Mother, Stacey-Anne and Meningitis Centre Australia are calling on the New South Wales Government to include the Meningococcal B vaccine in New South Wales state immunisation program.
