A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 78-year-old female from metropolitan Adelaide, who is in hospital in a stable condition.

The strain is yet to be identified.

Multiple people who had contact with the patient have been identified, and six people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information has been distributed to contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: National Guidelines for Public Health Units.

There have been six people notified with invasive meningococcal disease in South Australia this year.

Of those cases, three have been B strain, one has been Y strain, one has been W strain and the other remains unknown.

Ten people had been notified with invasive meningococcal disease in South Australia at the same time last year.
