A 21-year-old man has been hospitalised with meningococcal disease.

The man, from metropolitan Adelaide, is in a stable condition.

The strain has been identified as serogroup B, and multiple people who had contact with the patient have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

There have been 25 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year compared to 26 recorded at the same time last year. Of the 25 cases, 17 have been in serogroup B, four in serogroup Y and four serogroup W.

An Adelaide baby was left in a serious condition in April this year after contracting meningococcal B strain, and parents are urged to take up the free meningococcal vaccine available to children up to four years old.
